Why Networking Is Important for International Students Studying in the US

mba in usa

Many students often forget the importance of networking in 2018. Networking with fellow students, faculty members and other professionals not only builds your professional network overseas but also increases your chances of landing your dream job. In fact, the chances of getting a job just by applying to various companies are slim. You need to build your professional network and get recommendations from peers and professors in order to boost your career.

Use Your Campus

Don’t know where to start networking? Start with your college, university or school. Find students who share goals and interests similar to yours. Many international students usually make life-long friends on campus. Then, meet students from other colleges, universities and schools.

Furthermore, make it a point to attend career fairs, resume critique workshops and meet foreign education consultants. Some MBA universities in USA also offer placements and internships.

Stay Connected

After connecting with students, professors and other faculty members on campus, use LinkedIn to stay connected to them. Try to make connections with industry experts. Reach out to people you admire.

For example, if you’re studying journalism in the U.S. and you admire a renowned journalist who writes in the New York Times, send her a LinkedIn message saying how much you love her work and what you admire about her the most. It doesn’t hurt to send messages and connect with people.

Who knows? It might even lead to an interview, an internship or job opportunity.

How to Network

Okay, now that you know where to start networking, it’s time to get some tips on how to network. Below are a few tips to get you started:

  • Make sure you have some conversation starters handy: Starting a conversation can be hard but it doesn’t have to be! Be prepared with some well-known icebreakers. Questions like “What made you start working for (insert company)?” or “Is this your first time at this event?” can help you connect with professionals.
  • Be yourself: While it’s important to be professional and courteous, professionals do want to get to know you. Let your personality shine through. If you think he/she will appreciate a few jokes, crack them. Always read a person’s body language.
  • Ask pertinent questions: While talking to a professional, use the opportunity to ask relevant questions about your field. You can pick their brains about the specialization you should take up in your final year or how you can boost your resume.
  • Follow-up: Always send an email about your conversation after meeting them. Let them know how much you appreciated their valuable insights, suggestions and other inputs.

Networking is an important part of your career. International students can gradually build a support network by meeting people and develop long-lasting professional relationships. For more information on networking, contact study abroad consultants.

Are Internationals not Getting Jobs after MS in USA?

job interview

With the immigration, visa, and work permit rules getting more rigid with time, it is extremely important to keep yourself updated about the post-study job opportunities overseas. Through this article we’ll be answering a question asked by most aspiring foreign education students ‘Are internationals not getting jobs after MS in the USA?’

The US Government recently made significant changes in the visa and immigration rules which have increased the level of tension among International students which includes Indians too. The level of uncertainty among both parents and students in regards to study abroad programs has risen drastically and why shouldn’t it? After all who’d not want to study in USA, attain an international masters certificate and recover a significant part of the amount that you’ve paid for their education.

Students who are exceptionally good, bright and deserving are unlikely to get affected by this turmoil. Yes, it’s true that most international countries are making their immigration and visa rules more stringent than ever, but if you’re qualified enough, you will continue to enjoy the post-study opportunities that the US has to offer.

The United States of America is by far one the most popular, study abroad destinations among international students is a statement passed by most study abroad consultants that we have in India. The recent policies laid down by the honorable President of America, Mr. Donald Trump and a few recent crimes that give us the chills has become a major concern for students who yearn to complete their education in America. But let’s be honest and ask ourselves is America the only the place where crimes take place? We should learn to accept the fact that crimes happen elsewhere too. In Addition to this, The United States shaped its character as a universal beacon of innovation, education, research etc over the past few decades.

Now talking about the job opportunities in the United States post studying, we’d like to be very honest and share a few facts that may or may not affect your decision on studying overseas. Despite the revised immigration policies in America, international students are unlikely to get affected.

Internationals can study and work for a total of 12 months whereas STEM graduates can do so for a period of 26 months after completing their program. The possibility of these immigration laws affecting the development and the education policy surrounding it is highly unlikely. When your OPT expires, you will have to apply for an H1B visa, which according to President Donald Trump is a pathway to take up entry-level IT jobs.

Therefore, we’d like to say that the question we were most curious about all this while isn’t true.
