In 1970, the Manchester Metropolitan University was established as Manchester Polytechnic with the merger of three colleges. In the year 1992, it acquired university status and in the same year, Crewe and Alsager College of Higher Education in South Cheshire also assimilated.

The university is around Oxford Road on the southern side of the city centre, which forms Europe’s largest urban higher education region. Although, almost 6,000 students were based at Manchester Metropolitan University‘s campuses at Crewe and Alsager in Cheshire.
