What does the Trump Reign Mean for Indian Students Planning to Study in the USA

The number of international students opting to study in USA is increasing by the day. Universities in USA have one of the world’s finest university education systems. The place is home to several thousand colleges and universities, which offer courses in varied disciplines, including STEM programs in USA. These universities pride themselves in offering cutting edge technology, the best research facilities and also offer the best possible resources to students.

Lately, there has been quite a buzz surrounding the introduction of Donald Trump’s H-1B visa Bill in the House of Representatives. Many believe that this is not the best-suited time for Indian students to study in the US. However, this is not true. Let’s have a clear understanding of the current scenario by understanding what the hype is all about.

What are H-1B visas?

The H-1B visa is an employment-based, non-immigrant visa for temporary workers. Once the employer offers a job to an individual, the H1B visa petition has to be applied with the US Immigration Department.

Introduction of a new legislation

Earlier in the year, a new legislation was introduced in the US House of Representatives which aimed at doubling the minimum salary of H-1B visa holders to $130,000 ((approximately INR 89 lakhs). This amount is almost twice than that of the current H-1B minimum wage of $60,000 (approximately INR 40.7 lakhs). The proposed bill also stated that preference needs to be given to students educated in the US rather than relying on a computerized lottery system. Another proposed change is that spouses of H-1B visa holders will be prohibited from working in the US.

Current stance

As of today, the situation is status quo. Though it is assumed that the commercial issue will result in a full-scale war amid global markets including India, this will not impact students. India has an upper hand than other countries in the world when it comes to relations with Trump, not only due to the words of praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but also as US considers India as a natural counterbalance to China. Besides, Trump cannot chose to ignore the fact that US universities will lose revenue from around 1.66 lakh students coming from India.

It is safe to say that the news does not mean much for students seeking to go to USA to pursue a degree. Study in USA consultants do not see anything changing in near future. The probability of Trump getting his way is virtually nil. Education specialists recommend that aspiring students continue planning their study abroad program in the USA. Students are welcome to study and then work in the country. Even if the H1-B bill is passed, it will only impact those seeking to directly work in the United States.  The study + OPT route to the H-1B will stay intact, if anything, it will only get better for students who complete their Masters in the US.

According to the latest news, the White House has revealed that it will delay indefinitely any review of the H1B visa rules and other related visas. Some however believe that they will delay it for more a year. No measure is therefore expected before the beginning of this year’s processing season. US will continue to accept applications for H-1B visas, and will begin seeking applications for the fiscal year 2018 from the 3rd of April.
