Royal Holloway, University of London
Royal Holloway, University of London, is renowned for its innovative approach to history and creativity. Its large campus offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in many subjects, preparing students for successful professions.
Royal Holloway College was founded in 1879 by Thomas Holloway. During a time when women had few opportunities, he wanted to find a college for women. Holloway’s wife, Jane, also supported women’s education and charity. Queen Victoria opened the college in 1886.
Along with Bedford College, it joined the University of London in 1900 and in 1985 they merged to form what is today called the Royal Holloway University of London. The Loire Valley’s Château de Chambord inspired Crossland’s majestic Victorian Founder’s Building. The Building has a large façade and interior and houses the Picture Gallery, chapel, and student dormitories.
Starting as a women’s college, Royal Holloway began accepting men in 1945 and became coeducational. Today, Royal Holloway is a diverse institution distinguished for its expertise in many disciplines and strength in research and teaching.
